Visit our Traditional Maasai Village

Welcome to Kenya, Welcome to Oyaratta Village

Hello, or as we say in the Maa language, "Supa"! My name is Steve. I'm a Maasai, son of the village chief, living in my family's village in the Maasai Mara. I grew up here, then went to university in the city, before returning back to my village to continue my traditions. You are very welcome to come and visit us. I'd love to give you a tour and show you our culture.

You can contact me via WhatsApp – my phone number is at the bottom of this webpage. However, because I need to walk to a nearby village to recharge my phone (we don't have electricity in the village), sometimes I may be delayed in replying. Thank you for your patience.

Looking forward to welcoming you to our village!

About your visit to Oyaratta Village

Our village is called Oyaratta Village, named after the great valley and the sloping of the mountain. The village has been operating for over 23 years. We feel very lucky. Nearby our village is a water stream which feeds water into the Mara river. We've also been able to build a successful school for the local children in our community.

If you are coming to the Mara to go on safari, it will be very convenient to visit us. We're not too far from the big park entrance (Masai Mara National Reserve Main Gate), just off the main road (C12). Have your tour guide call me and I can direct them.

In the village we do a lot of cultural activities, such as the dancing of the warriors and women – these ceremonies are normally performed on special occasions like marriage, naming ceremonies and the blessing of our warriors before they go hunting.

We will show you our traditional huts, our bead making and wood cutting, and how we make fire using natural wood. Sometimes we will show you how we prepare a special mixture of animal blood and milk. This is used in 'rights of passage' ceremonies.

We have some beautiful handmade souvenirs available for purchase, so bring some cash. USD, EUR and KES are all OK.

We also have some optional extras:

  • Men can go on a nature walk with the warriors, where they can experience various animals up close, practice spear throwing, steel working and shoe-making, as well as domestic animal marking, i.e. ear notching.

  • Learn how to create beautiful beaded jewellery with our Maasai ladies.

  • Wear our beautiful attires during the visit for better quality photos as they engaged in our divine roles.

  • Women can dress as part of our tribe and be taken to river to fetch water and bring back to our home for domestic use, as well as wood fetching.

  • Bird watching.

  • Experiencing our nightly songs, especially when our cows are coming back home.

  • A traditional Maasai House home stay for visitors who want to further experience our amazing nomadic lifestyle.
